Designing With Clay Brick
Think of who has used brick on key projects: Thomas Jefferson, Henry Hobson Richardson, Daniel Burnham, Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Kahn, Pelli Clarke Pelli, Michael Graves and many more. But brick doesn’t have to be on a landmark to show significance. With endless patterns, colors, and sizes to choose from, clay brick will elevate your designs to stand out from the rest.
Educational Resources For Architects
AIA Continuing Education
Because brick has been used so frequently for so long, BIA offers architects and designers a variety of courses and learning venues where they can learn about our product. We also offer online courses through Hanley Wood University and AEC Daily, our own courses that can be taken online, and a series of “live” courses that can be delivered by BIA staff or BIA members who hold the Certified Brick Specialist (CBS) designation.
Technical Notes
Architects, designers, engineers and of course members of the brick industry have depended on BIA’s Technical Notes since we first published the series in 1950. Each document is written so that the user will certainly – and frequently exceed – the stipulations outlined in their building code. This series is what BIA is best known for, and they are updated on a regular basis. Click here to view BIA’s CAD Details on the AEC Info Website.
Brick Masonry Techniques for Architects Video Series
For architects who want a quick overview on a specific topic, BIA's master mason has developed 20 videos on our YouTube channel that are specifically geared towards architects. Lasting up to a minute and a half apiece, they can be accessed from any device with an internet browser at anytime. See the series “Brick Masonry Techniques for Architects” for more information.
